Letter to the Editor: How do you stop the killers around us?

Yesterday morning, I found our new beautiful baby llama dead in the barn, killed by a wild animal. A senseless killing. The area is fenced in to keep cougars, coyotes and wolves out and the llamas safely within. Yet the killer still came in and killed.

I felt like a police officer arriving too late to stop the act, and asked myself what else I could have done. If I had just been there, I could have stopped it. But I wasn't there, just as no policeman was present at the Newtown school. I'm angry, but helpless to change what happened.

Just like at Newtown, the fact that the barn was a restricted area had no impact on the killer. No signs or laws would have deferred him. Only the presence of a superior force would have kept him away or stopped him.

I can't go around shooting all the potential killers--they're here and always will be with us. So too with our society. All I can do is equip and prepare myself, to help and protect llamas, the sheep and the children from the wolves, madmen and evil that exist in our world. This why I am armed and stay proficient.

Mr. Thomas, sounds to me like Mr. Peck is advocating for 24hr. armed patrols for your Llams and our schools. Nothing else could have saved your Llama.

Hate to say it, Mr. Thomas, but you are not taking responsibility for what happened to your llama. If you had, that llama would be with us today.
