IN MY OPINION: Foreign policy - another Obama failure
Obama's chickens have come home to roost. His approach of apologizing to those who hate us while leaving our friends and allies wondering if they can count on us is producing the same results achieved by the Carter administration.
The tragic results of last week are not the result of some movie that is critical of Mohammed. Truth is the movie doesn't actually exist. All that exists is a chopped up and nearly incomprehensible "movie trailer." The movie excuse is simply a cover story established by the administration to distract the American people from the real issue. The real issue is Obama's failed foreign policy.
What does exist is a fragile Middle Eastern culture of intolerance and hate. A culture where violence and insurrection have been held in check by dictatorial regimes. A culture where ignorance of American values and our way of life is the part of the problem. A culture where the powerless gain power by denigrating those who have power and influence. In such a culture apologizing for exercising that power does not result in forgiveness and understanding. It simply reinforces the preconceived prejudice of the powerless and emboldens them to action.
It happened to Jimmy Carter. Carter publicly supported the Shah of Iran while also accusing him of human rights violations. A weakened Shah was replaced by radical fundamentalist Ayatollah Khomeini who immediately killed thousands and relegated women back to the dark ages. It was a wonderful triumph for human rights and American values.
Now Jimmy Carter's failure has left of us with a regime bent on eliminating Israel.
In 2009 Obama made a speech at the Islamic Al Azhar University in Egypt. He made sure Egyptian President Mubarak was not invited but 10 representatives of the Muslim Brotherhood were. It was the beginning of the Obama apology tour. Now Mubarak is gone and the Muslim Brotherhood is in charge and Obama is not sure if Egypt is a friend or a foe.
Obama has succeeded in emboldening more enemies of Israel.
To make matters worse Obama ignored requests for meetings with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu because he was too busy campaigning.
It's not the first time Obama has dissed the Israeli Prime Minister. But in view of unrest in the area it was important to reinforce our support of Israel. Obama should have made time to meet with Netanyahu and made it clear that Israel could still count on the U.S.
Obama inherited a bad economy and two wars but his administration has done nothing to improve the situation.
In fact, the events of the past week might well point to a significantly worse situation in the Middle East where upwards of 30 countries are reporting attacks on American embassies. It is just another example of a failure of leadership from this President.
One of my liberal/progressive critics agreed with my comment recently that the Presidency is no place for on-the-job training, but he claimed, Obama is no longer a trainee.
The problem is it is not clear Obama has learned anything. He continues to spout the same ideological principles that he held dear when he was elected. He continues to be unwilling to negotiate while criticizing his opponents for their unwillingness to compromise.
It is far past time for Obama to demonstrate some leadership and stand up to the Islamic radicals in the world.
It is far past time to quit apologizing for American values of freedom of religion and speech. It is far past time for Obama to stand up for American values of equal rights for women.
Instead of campaign pleas for more time to address the issues Obama needs to take some real action.
Unless he does, it is time to vote for someone else before we find ourselves in a new war. A war that involves the use of nuclear weapons.
