LETTER TO THE EDITOR: New library is on track
I wish to acknowledge the cooperative and the successful efforts of the city of Chelan and Library advocates to fund a library on the main floor of the Masonic building.
Many people from city government and the community have been working on this specific project for more than two years.
Why is cooperation so important?
Because some of the grants applied for are for municipalities--the city--and some grants and all donations were donated to the grass roots, non-profit organization--the Chelan Friends of the Public Library.
Three public meetings were held, in the city council chambers and the library, to solicit public opinion about the library project.
Then, based on city council approval of the detailed plans and using funds from a $24,000 planning grant, the city applied for a $490,000 grant from the State of Washington to renovate the entire first floor (7,000 square feet) of the Masonic building, for the library, leaving the second floor (3,200 square feet) for community use. That Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) grant was awarded to the city and contractually agreed upon in early summer.
Also, since the beginning of the year, the Friends of the Library have received over $200,000 from service groups, large and small businesses and hundreds of individuals.
I'm very proud of the trust that donors have in the Friends.
I understand that the Friends has an obligation to create a quality library that serves everyone: residents looking for the next good read; tourists in the summer who seek a cool, quiet place to go on-line or read; children during the summer break who need literacy encouragement; and adults wanting to learn about computers with a volunteer teacher.
I'm also very proud of the trusting, cooperative relationship of the city government with the Friends and library advocates.
This successful effort could not happen otherwise.
It is time to turn the page and to celebrate this stellar accomplishment and the exciting plans for the future. Those plans include working together to make Chelan's library the best one around.
President, Chelan Friends of the Public Library and Chair of the Library planning Committee
