IN MY OPINION: New Year's resolution: Be a kinder gentler conservative

Bill Forhan
Publisher

In recent months I have received a number of emails telling me how insensitive I have been in dealing with my liberal friends and critics.

It's not intended but apparently many of my readers just don't like my direct approach to those with whom I disagree. So, I've decided I need to consider the feelings of my readers and try to make the editorial pages more friendly to their views.

This year we will begin a new oped policy. Each week will have a different focus with conservative viewpoints on the first and third week if each month and progressive opinion on the second and fourth week. On the second and fourth weeks I will refrain from commenting on any letters or opinion columns, and no conservative letters will run during "progressive week." Conversely, on the first and third weeks only conservative opinion will be run. The pages will be clearly marked as containing only opinion of either a conservative or liberal persuasion. That way those who find opinions that differ from their own can avoid the page that week. When a fifth week occurs that week will be a mixed page and an opportunity for open debate to those who are interested in that type of give and take.

I challenge my progressive friends to take advantage of the space I am offering them to make their case for larger government, more social programs, more restrictive environmental policy, or any of the other policies they believe are essential to improving the quality of life in this country. I will not be writing a column those weeks. I will have a number of columns available to fill the space that I believe support the progressive agenda, but the space is meant to be available for local people to express their opinion and make their case to their neighbors. The quality of that page will rest mostly on the ability of progressives to make their case in a compelling way.

So pass the word. The second and fourth week of each month is liberals' opportunity to convince me and my fellow conservatives why our view of the world is just old and out of date.

The one place I could count on to go to every week for a conservative voice of reason...now I have to check the calender!
