Harold (Hal) M. Porter

Harold (Hal) M. Porter, 84, of Manson passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014 in Chelan. He was born in Etonia, Saskatchewan, Canada to Murray and Ethel Porter. He was married June 7, 1952 to Patricia Northrup in Snohomish, Wash. He enlisted in the Navy in 1947, where he was an EG3 and served 5 years, spending time on the USS Menifee during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he began work at Boeing, where he worked with missile project sites, namely at Cape Canaveral to help launch the very first space shuttle, The Columbia. He worked at Boeing for 37 years before retiring to Manson in 1990. He and his family lived in North Dakota, Wyoming, Snohomish, Monroe, Kent, and Manson, Wash. He worked on the Chief Seattle Council Board for Boy Scouts and assisted Scout Leaders with planning and attending hiking and camping excursions for 12 years, walking or canoeing most of the state of Washington with his own three scout sons.
Since his move to Manson, he was involved in more community organizations. He was the Project Manager on the First Habitat for Humanity House, built in Manson, and was Kiwanian of the Year in 2001, helping with community tree felling around the valley. He recently was a member of The Sportsman's Association, helping to plan and develop the new salmon habitat on the Columbia River at Beebe Springs. Hal also spent the last 11 years with the Chelan County Housing Authority in Wenatchee. Hobbies included hunting, fishing, rock hounding and traveling with family and friends. His family was his greatest achievement, born both by love and helping hand, he was a constant guide and supportive fan.
Hal is survived by his wife Patty, of Manson, Ken (Pat) Porter of Issaquah, Mike Porter of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Kathy (Rick) Pittman of Manson and Marty (Julie) Porter of Manson. His 8 grandchildren, Lindsay (Craig) Timmermans of East Wenatchee, Ryan (Danielle) Pittman of Renton, Brendon (Stef) Porter of Easton, Leslie Porter of Auburn, Shannon (Justin) Perri of Manson, Tia Belisle of Fall City, Kevin Porter of Issaquah, and Robert Pittman of Manson. And his 3 great-grandchildren, Piper Timmermans, Teagan and Jase Perri. He is also survived by his sister Alice Rawley of Tonasket, his brother Clyde (Jo) Porter of Tonasket, his sister Dorothy (Wally) Cauffman of Snohomish and his brother Bob (Joanne) Porter of Snohomish. He was also survived by a large extended family and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and sisters Muriel Kazen and Wanda Mathers.
Hal will be interred at the Tahoma National Cemetery on Friday, March 21 at 11:30 a.m. in Kent, Wash. In leiu of flowers charitable donations are suggested to The Lake Chelan Sportsman's Association or Lake Chelan Habitat For Humanity.
