Local firemen donate to Oso Landslide relief
Photo and story Submitted by Dan Crandall President, Chelan District 7 Firefighters Association

The Chelan District 7 Firefighters Association is committed to supporting our local community of Chelan, as well as other communities in our area.
Recently, as news of the disaster in Oso, Washington spread across the country, our Chelan organization of firefighters decided unanimously to help them by donating $1,000 to their fire department. On Thursday, April 17, two Chelan volunteer firefighters, Lt. John Synder and FF. Dan Crandall, delivered the check to Fire Chief John (Willie) Harper of the Oso Fire Department. We joined countless others from across the state and the nation in standing behind the little community. As we toured their fire station, which had been temporarily converted into a community relief center, we read some of the many messages of love, prayers and support displayed on its walls. One banner had hundreds of handprints with personal messages. Another was covered with hearts.
We also visited the site of the March 22 disaster, and were stunned by the extent of damage. As we looked across a desolate plain of mud and debris where a community once stood, we saw dozens of crews with cranes, bulldozers and trucks engaged in recovery work.
What this small village has borne on its shoulders is beyond imaginable. The citizens of Oso and their first responders rose bravely to the challenge posed by the catastrophe and have become an inspiration to people everywhere. They personify the human spirit triumphing in the worst situations. Chelan firefighters offer our hand in friendship to Oso. We also send our deepest condolences to them for their enormous loss.
