The Message: "We Are Broken..."

The city of Newtown Conn. Declared in the recent headline "We Are Broken..." I think the thing that leaves me most shaken about this latest school shooting is the thought that God is not shocked by it. God was not caught off guard this time any more than He was caught off guard when Herod killed all the children in Bethlehem going after His (God's) Son.

God knew this time would come upon us when we would lose hope and life would become cheap. And I believe God knew we would look at this and blame the gun and not the shooter. He knew we would take no blame but take it upon ourselves to fix what is broken rather than turn to Him. He knew many, in their grief, would curse Him, even those who have already denied His name.

We are witnessing a thing theologians call judgment by abandonment. God is not actively pursuing the wrath that is to come against us. He is merely giving us what we want or even demand...a view of a world without Him.

To say God is grieved may be an understatement but what grieves Him may surprise you. It is a fact that those little ones who were shot in that school were being taught in that school that He did not create them. They were taught in that school the ultimate goal is self confidence and self satisfaction and a positive self image. And at the same time they were discouraged from a dependency on faith.

God has received those little ones into His arms and they are no longer afraid. You see, God does not suffer loss at the hand of man. It is at the heart and soul that man grieves God.

This is a tragedy, but tragedy happens every day as thousands and millions of our young people reach the crucial stage where the "child-like faith" wanes into disbelief, not as a natural progression but as a systematic dismantling of a child's natural tendency to believe in something greater than self.

The tragedy is not entirely preventable, we're human, we kill. But the answer to minimizing this quirk of our human nature isn't to separate us from weapons. The answer is a proactive one; it is the encouragement of faith. Politicos across the nation and including the president himself call for change in American policies to prevent this tragedy from re-occurring. They pray for the victims then ignore God for the answers.

FAITH changes things - HOPE changes things - LOVE changes things - and in the crutch of religious faith is the only place one can find all these. Realistically, what would have stopped this shooter and all those on the growing list which now bears his name? Nothing but a change of heart.

Not wanting to be just another voice in the uproar I have abstained from writing about the tragedy at Newtown. However, in hearing the sides polarizing before us we must - as pain turns to anger and activism - speak with passion but decide with cool heads.

Think about it. Disarming the populace is not the answer. Assuming the government could go door to door and take all the weapons out of the hands of the citizenry - squirrel rifles and shot guns included - clubs and spears worked just fine in centuries past. Weapons are created out of necessity and motivation. You take all the guns and you still have hearts full of fear and anger and hopelessness that will find a way to arm themselves.

Voltaire said, "If God made us in His image we certainly have returned the compliment."

Voltaire was not a Christian man but this truth speaks volumes. We have taken God out of schools and government and moral conscience and replaced Him with ourselves. "In Man We Trust" because God allows bad things to happen. God allows bad things because broken hearts have an opening; broken hearts search for answers; broken hearts are sometimes humble.

Voltaire also said "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him." Why? Because Man is not the answer. It is because of man that this world is broken. God was there at the beginning and He'll be there in the end and in between we are given a choice. God will break you like the wild animal you are until you submit or reject Him. Be broken in this tragedy and receive Him.
