BRIEFLY: Free tax prep; Financial class; Manson FFA; Suicide Prevention coalition

AARP tax help available
The AARP tax aid program, in partnership with Chelan-Douglas Asset Building Coalition is looking for a volunteer to assist with their free tax preparation service which will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Chelan Public Library Feb. 6 to April 10. Free training will be held in January.

Financial Peace University
The Chelan Seventh Day Adventist Church, located at 109 E. Highland Ave., in Chelan will host a Financial Peace University course beginning Jan. 15.
The course is designed by respected financial leader, Dave Ramsey and has positively changed the financial future of more than half a million families since its inception.
The updated nine-week course provides families and individuals with practical tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term financial success.
The course meets once a week where a different lesson is taught by Dave through DVDs, which is then followed by a group discussion.
Attendance in the class is free, but there is a cost for the materials used. For more information or to register for the class, call Jan Ellis at 509-682-5622.

Manson FFA students place second
Manson FFA Ag Mechanics Team of Efrain Escoto, Peter Cortez, Jesse Russell, Marco Capi, and Everth Fernandez competed in a welding and design competition at Cashmere High School, on Wednesday, Dec. 12.
The competition was to build a tower crane out of 5 1/8 welding rod, to hold the most weight. Team One which consisted of Efrain, Jesse and Peter received a 2nd place banner with a weight of 27 lbs missing out on first place by 3 lbs. Team Two, Everth and Marco got a 4th place banner holding 18lbs.
The teams are looking forward to the next contest which will be held in Omak in January.

Suicide Prevention Coalition training
Gatekeepers continue to canvas the community training members in suicide prevention strategies. If you have a group that would like to be trained send an email to and SPC will assist in getting a trainer assigned and date confirmed for your group. Everyone that is interested is encouraged to send an email requesting to be included.
SPC needs include:
1. A few more people to staff the booth at the Wenatchee Wild game Jan. 18, 5:30 to 9 p.m. You will assist people in signing up for Gatekeeper trainings and answer questions.
2. Four or five people needed to assist with gathering resources available in each of the cities in Chelan, Douglas, & Grant Counties.
3. Several people to talk with local sponsors for donations.
4. 1 or more to help with gathering content for website.
5. Brochures/flyers - need people to assist with content and design for outreaches and media blitz.
