Local guild names board members
Gold Awareness Guild's mission is to spread awareness for Childhood Cancers, support local kids battling cancer, advocate for more awareness and support, and raise money for Seattle Children's Hospital Childhood Cancer Research.
On April 23, 2010 Colette Hernandez's son, Detric was diagnosed with stage-4 lymphoma and leukemia. At the age of 7, Detric spent 11 months at Seattle Children's Hospital, receiving intensive chemotherapy and radiation with his mother and grandmother by his side. Detric battled very bravely, according to his mother, and went into remission on Aug. 19, 2010, but had to continue chemotherapy at home to ensure no relapse of cancer cells. Detric finished chemotherapy on Aug. 19, 2013 and celebrated three years cancer-free.
The guild started with a realization for Hernandez that many people do not know that a gold ribbon represents Childhood Cancer Awareness or that September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
