Blue Corduroy Jackets, the icon of the FFA. Around 100 of these jackets full of FFA members from all around NCW converged on Chelan High School on Wednesday the 10th for the 2013 District VII Leadership Career Development Events. The FFA members were competing for the 3 berths into state level competition. The CDEs that were contested were Creed Speaking, Prepared Public Speaking, Extemporaneous Public Speaking, Novice Parliamentary Procedure, and Parliamentary Procedure.
8 Freshman members competed in the Creed Speaking CDE. Olivia Abbott of Cashmere was 1st, Jenna Valentine of Tonasket 2nd, and Erick Straub of Chelan filled the final spot to state finishing 3rd. Creed Speaking involves reciting the 5 paragraphs of the FFA Creed and then answering 3 questions about it. Thomas Armstrong placed 7th for Chelan, as well.
The Prepared Public Speaking CDE requires contestants to research and write a manuscript about and agricultural related topic, prepare, practice, and present a 6-8 minute speech, and then answer 5 minutes of questions about it. Lupe Villasenor of Chelan brought home the top honors finishing first, Apolinar Blanco of Chelan earned the second place banner, and Julia Spangler of Wenatchee was 3rd.
6 members competed in Extemporaneous Public Speaking where they had to draw 3 topics, choose one, and then in 30 minutes prepare a 4-6 minute speech, and respond to 5 minutes of questions. Wyatt O;Brien of Tonasket was 1st, Hayley Huber of Wenatchee finished 2nd and Claire Thornton of Tonasket will be the final District VII representative with her 3rd place finish.
The Novice Parliamentary Procedure is a brand new CDE this year. It requires a team of 6 freshman members to perform the Official Opening and Closing Ceremonies of an FFA Meeting and then in the middle perform a parliamentary demonstration when given a main motion. There are 4 motions assigned to specific members and each member is required to make 3 debates. Members are evaluated on the correct use of parliamentary law, quality of debate, and conclusions reached. Tonasket J earned the 1st place slot, Cashmere was 2nd and Tonasket-D was 3rd.
Tonasket's winning ways continued in the Parliamentary Procedure CDE with Tonasket G placing 1st, Tonasket-D2 placing 2nd and Wenatchee rounding out in 3rd. The Parliamentary Procedure CDE requires contestants to take knowledge test, and then perform specific parliamentary skills, take minutes, and make debates. Teams and individuals are evaluated on the quality of all these skills.
All qualifiers will compete in the Washington State FFA Leadership CDEs at the 83rd Washington State FFA Convention on the campus of Washington State University in Pullman May 9-11.
