Chelan FFA competes
in State forestry contest
|Submitted by Rod Cool|
The nicest day of the year on the Westside of the state set the stage for a great day for the Chelan FFA. Ten members had traveled over the passes to compete in the 2014 Washington State FFA Forestry Career Development Event. The Chelan FFA "Timberbeasts" had been working all spring to prepare for the event.
The event was set into nine practicum event rotations. The first was Timber Cruising Inventory, given a plot center, the team then had to determine the plot radius for a 1/25th of an acre plot, then inventory the trees in the plot using the Girard method for determining size class and height, then determining the number of trees per acre and the volume per acre. The next was an issues presentation by the team. They drew the issue of managing a timber stand with Armillaria root rot and Phellinus root rot for maximum revenue. The rest of the CDE was individual and consisted of Tree Identification, Tool Identification, Chainsaw ID and Troubleshooting, Map Interpretation, Compass and Pacing and the General Knowledge test.
The Chelan FFA Team #1 proved that they were there to compete and when all the rotations were done and the all the points tallied. They stood more than 100 points in front of the closest team, as the 2014 Champion Forestry Team and will represent the Washington FFA at the National FFA Forestry CDE at the Bernheim Research Forest in Clermont, Kentucky at the National FFA Convention in October. All five team members placed in the top 10, with Bobby Hanson leading the way in third, Apol Blanco in fifth, Dane Schwartz in sixth, Jake Straub in seventh, and Javier Rivera in ninth. Chelan Team 2 also finished in the hardware bringing home a sixth place plaque led by Romaine Doty, followed by Erick Straub, Jesus Rodriguez, Jon Bobadilla, and Sam Lorenz.
Chelan FFA members will have another couple busy weeks, competing in the State Livestock CDE and Meats CDE at the Spokane Jr. Livestock Show on May 7, District VII First Year CDE on May 8. They will travel to the 84th Washington State FFA Convention on May 14-18 to compete in Farm Business Management, Meats, Agriculture Issues Forum, Extemporaneous Public Speaking, Job Interview, and Creed Speaking.
