The Manson soccer team starts off their season undefeated in the league and with one loss to a non-league team. On March 23, the Trojans opened up league play, hosting Bridgeport at Manson High School.
For the first league game of the 2013 season, Jesus Sanchez dominated on offense scoring two goals and assisted on the third goal. Miguel Leyva scored a goal and had an assist. The Trojans beat the Mustangs 3-1.
"We were up 3 to 0 at half, let down some in the second half and Bridgeport got a goal," said Manson Head Coach Phil Thomas. "We missed many chances to score in the second half."
Thomas said the team passed the ball well and had about 90 percent of the possessions.
The Trojans hosted another game against Liberty Bell and crushed their opponents 13-0 on March 26. Efrain Escoto scored four goals, Sanchez scored three, and Jesus Lopez scored 2. Olegario Orozco, Ididro Escoto, Jose Gonzales, and Angel Garcia each scored one goal.
"We really came out ready to play. Liberty Bell was 4-0 coming into the game, so we knew we had to come out hard," Thomas said. "We scored two minutes into the game and that set the tone for the game."
Manson continued the winning streak with a win against Tonasket on March 28, at home, 5-1. Gonzales scored three goals, and Sanchez and Efrain Escoto each scored one. Isidro Escoto had two assists.
"[Manson] kept the ball in Tonasket's half of the field for much of the second half. Had a shut out except for a Tonasket penalty kick at the end of the game," Thomas said.
On April 6, Manson hosted Cashmere in a 5-1 win. Sanchez had two goals and two assists, and Uriel Lopez had one goal and one assist. Sylvian Borrey, and Miguel Leyva also scored goals with assists from Angel Garcia and Jose Gonzalez.
"Good pressure on the ball. Over all good team effort with a number of starters gone or not playing," Thomas said. "Several players were playing different positions they normally play."
Thomas said Ulises Adame played a great game at defense and Slavador Leyva had a great game in the goal.
Manson played Oroville on April 9, but results were unavailable at press time. The next game is on April 11, against Chelan.
