Chelan grapplers take
first at Cashmere invite

Chelan Goat wrestlers took first-place honors at the Cashmere invite this past Saturday, Dec. 21. With 162.5 team points, CHS earned top honors on the day.
Coming in second with 120 team points was Quincy High School. Third-place honors went to Kittitas with 113.5 team points. Cashmere took the fourth-place spot with 112.5 team points.
Other competitors at the event, in placing order were, Lake Roosevelt, Medical Lake, Reardan, Cascade, Cle Elum and Omak.
"The Goats came to wrestle today and it showed, as they walked away with the team title against nine others schools," Chelan Coach Jay McGuffin said.
Chelan's first-place finishers include Angel Hernandez, 113 lbs.; Jairo De La Cruz, 145 lbs.; and Asa Schwartz dominated with a second-round pin in the finals of the 220-lb. division.
Chelan's Juan Garcia earned second-place honors in the 152-lb. weight class division.
Also earning second place honors for Chelan was Matt Barnes, 160 lbs. and Carlos Montes.
Mauricio and Ivan Reyes, Julio Vera and Julian Buyas all came through the back door, placing third on the day. Ty Schwartz and Jose Padilla also made it to the 3rd/4th place match, both losing close matches. Overall, the Goats had 12 wrestlers place in the top four spots.
"It's a great way to go into Christmas break, today was a total team effort," McGuffin added.
The Chelan Goats wrestling team is set to take a break until this coming Saturday, Dec. 28, when they take to the road for the Royal City Christmas Invitational.
