Chelan falls to Cashmere

The Chelan tennis team had a busy last week, competing in a league match and a tournament.
Chelan traveled last Tuesday, April 29, taking on the Cashmere Bulldogs, with both the girls and the boys falling to the Bulldogs.
The boys lost their first match of the season, 4-1. The lone win by the Goats was by the doubles pairing of Collin Hendricks and Henry Elsner, defeating Cashmere's Jordan Moser and Ian Lindell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. The other doubles pair of Matt Barnes and Javier Navarro fell to Cashmere's Cameron Moser and Trey Michael lost in a tough match. Cashmere took the first set, 6-1, but Chelan earned the second set, 6-4. But Cashmere came back to win the third set, 6-3.
"This was the Chelan boys' first loss of the season, but they lost to a good team," Chelan Coach Marty Rothlisberger said. "Chelan did not play poorly, but Cashmere definitely was the better team tonight. More significantly, the Cashmere boys were clutch, winning the close matches. Chelan had managed to stay undefeated by being the clutch team all season. We were not clutch tonight, and hopefully this late season loss, right before the post-season, will serve as a humbling reality check to keep us focused."
The girls team also lost to Cashmere, 4-1. The lone win for the Lady Goats was by Chelan's Vanessa Miller, defeating Cashmere's Stephanie Preheim in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. The Chelan doubles pair of Sarah Kunkel and Abby Phelps fell to Carrie O'Donnell and Megan Reinhart. Cashmere took the first set 6-3, but the Lady Goats took the second set, 6-3. The tiebreaker was a marathon, with the Bulldogs eventually coming out on top, 19-17.

Last Friday and Saturday, May 2 -3, the Chelan tennis team traveled to Spokane for the 69th annual Inland Empire tennis tournament. The tournament had 53 schools and almost 800 athletes.
"Chelan did very well, played a lot of tennis, played great tennis, and picked up some impressive wins against big 3A and 4A schools with powerful programs," Rothlisberger said. "Overall, Chelan finished 19th out of 53 teams, and a close second behind LaSalle in the 1A classification. Chelan won more matches than they lost, which is outstanding considering Chelan was one of the smaller schools present."
The best Chelan finisher was Megan Rboinson, who lost her first match on Friday, but won her next four matches to place fifth out of 41 athletes. Teammate Shelby Dietrich had a great day on Friday, earning wins in her first three matches, including wins over athletes from 3A and 4A schools. She was eliminated from the tournament on Saturday just short of the semifinals.
On the boys side, the doubles team of Henry Elsner and Rylan Anderson lost their first match of the tournament, but came back to win the next two matches on Saturday and ended up finishing in eighth place.
Chelan has three matches this week. The Goats traveled to Quincy this past Tuesday, May 6. Chelan will head to Okanogan for a match on Thursday, May 8, and will host senior day on Friday, May 9, against Tonasket.
