Blake McAllister drives to the hoop during Saturday’s 3-on-3 basketball competition held at Don Morse Park. The event continued play Sunday as well.
The Liberty basketball squad took the court, one of many at Don Morse Park, on a sweltering Saturday, Aug. 16, in Chelan. It was a mere preliminary game, but the Liberty won it in thrilling fashion, 15-14. Amidst the black asphalt, feeling like a griddle preparing to fry an omelette, multiple teams played, and many had fun. Some were soaked in the agony of defeat.
The annual Slam N Jam 3-on-3 basketball tournament featured teams of varying ages, both male and female. Teams actually included four members with only three allowed on the court at one time, but unlimited substitutions were allowed.
Down 14-13 on the brink of defeat, Liberty team member Torrey Anderson drilled a 2-point shot, or what would normally constitute a 3-pointer. Each basket counted one point unless it was from beyond the arc, in which case it was awarded two points. Mikey Walter scored several baskets for Liberty while working inside the paint and rolling out to set screens as needed. Anderson and teammate Cody Hughes timed inside drives to the hoop well to execute layups. Anderson and Blake McAllister made key shots from beyond the arc with Anderson's being the most memorable.
The tournament concluded Sunday, results can be found in next week's Lake Chelan Mirror.
