The Shore to Shore Race, which includes a marathon, half marathon and a 10K, is back this year, Sept. 6, with a few improvements.
For the first time in the history of the Shore to Shore race, this year's event will feature chip timing.
According to Runner's World, some races allow winners to be winners based on a gun time and to be winners based on a chip time but should make clear distinctions as to how winners are divided. Shore to Shore has made it pretty clear winners will be determined by chip time. Generally, runners are given a computer chip that easily attaches to running shoes and measures an individual runner's net time, as opposed to when the gun is first fired. Multiple runners requested the change in 2013 and the race's organizers listened. Shore to Shore is a USA Track and Field certified race and the final qualifier for the Boston Marathon in the Pacific Northwest.
Generous sponsors stepped up this year to provide plenty of incentive for race participants. Those completing the race will receive a custom medal and technical shirts from Greenlayer. Bottles of wine will be given as prizes to participants in the marathon, half marathon and 10K.
Vin du Lac Winery will be selling bottles of wine and other items to Shore to Shore participants throughout the weekend with a 10 percent discount. Every 10th bag given to participants will feature a ticket for a free ski lift to Mission Ridge. At the finish area of the race, Iron Horse Brewery will have a beer garden set up for participants 21 and older.
Shuttle rides are provided to runners to their respective starting positions. Marathon participants must be at the North Shore Bible Church no later than 6 a.m. to receive a shuttle ride.
There will be aid stations every two miles providing Hammer Gel, Gatorade and water. There will also be a number of porta-potties throughout the course. Following the race, there will be food and refreshments.
Registration is still open and will remain open until Sept. 4. Registration prices are $100 for the marathon, $80 for the half marathon and $60 for the 10K through Sept. 4. In-person registration will be available Friday, Sept. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Vin du Lac Winery with higher registration fees. However, there is no registration the day of the race.
Volunteers are still needed for the race. Those who complete a race as a volunteer will receive free entry to an upcoming race and a free shirt.
