Public has chance to meet new hospital director
Dr. Brian Barstad shares a moment with a young patient.
The Lake Chelan Community Hospital Foundation and Get Fit! Lake Chelan invite the community to meet Dr. Brian Barstad, new hospital medical director.
Barstad will give a short presentation on heart health at the event, held at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12, at The Vogue in Chelan.
Barstad, who has experience as a family physician and an ER doctor, grew up in a small town in Minnesota and believes in practicing medicine with a human touch.
"Being a doctor is just as much about sitting at a bedside with a grandma and holding her hand," he said, "and because of my family practice experience, I think I offer personal touches to our ER patients that make them more comfortable."
In addition to personalized care, Barstad's special passion is treating patients who come to the ER with heart issues.
Barstad lights up when talking about the treatment he offers in those crisis situations. He will talk about that care in his presentation at The Vogue.
Barstad graduated from medical school at the University of North Dakota and finished his internship at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Georgia. He also spent four years in active duty in the Navy as a general medical officer before starting a nine-year family practice in Fargo.
During that period, he began working part-time in his hospital's ER and eventually transitioned into practicing ER medicine exclusively. He also spent three years working in an ER in Montana before coming to Chelan.
Drawn to the Lake Chelan community for its mountains and vibrant community, Barstad and his wife, a nurse, look forward to enjoying local outdoor activities like skiing, hiking and fishing.
