CHELAN— A 47-year-old man died Sunday morning following a base jumping accident near Highway 97A, according to the Chelan County Sheriff's Office.
Elliot Barstow of Entiat was pronounced dead at the scene after his parachute failed to fully deploy during a jump near Milepost 202.
Deputies responded to the area at approximately 8:42 a.m. after receiving notification of the accident. According to witness accounts, Barstow's parachute malfunction caused him to spin 180 degrees in mid-air before colliding with a rock wall. He subsequently fell approximately 650 feet to the ground, sustaining fatal injuries.
Emergency responders were immediately dispatched but were unable to save Barstow, who was pronounced deceased at the site.
Base jumping, which involves parachuting from fixed objects rather than aircraft, is considered one of the most dangerous recreational activities due to the limited altitude for parachute deployment and proximity to structures.
