Chelan goes green: Shamrock shuffle and top dog parade bring St. Patrick's spirit despite rainy start

CHELAN — Lake Chelan Valley residents braved cold and rainy conditions to participate in two St. Patrick's Day-themed events on Saturday, March 15, in downtown Chelan.

The day began with the Shamrock Shuffle, a 5K fundraiser organized by the Lake Chelan Lions Club to support children with Type One Diabetes. The event, which drew 71 registered participants, raises money to send local children to Camp Stix in Spokane and promotes diabetes awareness across all age groups.

Following the morning run, the community gathered for the Wayne Kelly Memorial St. Patty's Top Dog Parade through downtown Chelan. Participants of all ages dressed in green attire alongside their canine companions for the annual celebration.

Pat Kelly led the parade while holding a banner honoring his father, Wayne Kelly, for whom the event is named. Many participants wore traditional Scottish kilts and plaid as they marched through town.

The local Girl Scout Troop was also present, informing attendees that Girl Scout Cookies would be delivered soon to those who placed orders.

Dogs of various sizes participated in the festivities, with some owners creating elaborate costumes for their pets. One small dog was seen carrying a miniature St. Patrick figure on its back.

The morning Shamrock Shuffle began at Riverwalk Park Shelter, where young participants showed particular enthusiasm at the starting line of the 5K course.

Despite challenging weather at the start of the day, both events successfully brought the community together in celebration of Irish heritage and to support local charitable efforts.
