CHELAN — Chelan High School emerged victorious at the SkillsUSA Teamworks Washington State Competition, distinguishing itself as the only traditional high school to win against a field of specialized technical schools.
The competition tested students' proficiency in multiple construction disciplines including framing, electrical wiring, plumbing, and masonry. The winning team consisted of four Chelan students: Gabe Gilpin, Logan Watson, Tristan Sanderson, and Wade Sanderson, under the guidance of teacher and advisor Mr. Jason Sanderson.
In a separate event, Chelan student Johnny Castro competed in the carpentry competition, marking the school's first year of participation in this category. Despite facing unexpected challenges, Castro performed admirably. His competition included metal stud framing, which is more common in commercial building and not yet a focus in Chelan's programs. According to the school, Castro adapted well and learned on the fly.
School officials noted that all club programs and trips to state competitions are supported by local school levy funds, and expressed gratitude to the community for their continued support.
The SkillsUSA competition provides students with opportunities to demonstrate career-ready skills in various technical and trade fields, preparing them for future employment in industries facing skilled labor shortages.
