Chelan transportation tax measure remains neck-and-neck in latest count

CHELAN - The Chelan Transportation Benefit District's sales tax proposition remains undecided in Wednesday's ballot count, with just one vote separating the two sides.

According to updated results from the Chelan County Elections Office, the measure has received 1,008 votes (50.02%) in favor and 1,007 votes (49.97%) against.

The razor-thin margin represents a shift from Tuesday's initial count, though the race remains too close to call. The proposition would implement a 0.3% sales tax within the City of Chelan to fund transportation improvements over the next decade.

The measure would add three cents to every $10 purchase, with revenues dedicated to projects in the City's Six-Year Transportation Improvement Plan, including road maintenance, intersection upgrades, and pedestrian safety initiatives.

If approved, the tax would take effect January 1, 2025, applying to taxable purchases made within city limits. All project decisions would be made by the district's Governing Board following public hearings.

Election officials are continuing to process remaining ballots. The next ballot count will be released Thursday, November 7 at 5 p.m. Final results will be certified on Tuesday, November 26.
