Forest Service opens Christmas tree permit sales

Posted

WENATCHEE — The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has begun issuing Christmas tree cutting permits for the 2024 holiday season through three purchase options.

The U.S. Forest Service announced Wednesday that permits are available online through Recreation.gov, at select forest offices, and through authorized local vendors throughout North Central Washington. Each $5 permit allows families to harvest one tree up to 15 feet tall or dig a live transplant, with a limit of two permits per household.

The permits are non-refundable and restricted to use within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest boundaries. Harvesting is not allowed in wilderness areas, campgrounds, developed recreation areas, or tree plantations.

Fourth graders participating in the Every Kid Outdoors program can receive one free holiday tree permit with a valid pass or paper voucher printed from the Every Kid Outdoors website.

For online purchases, an additional $2.50 transaction fee applies. These permits must be printed and displayed on the vehicle dashboard when removing trees from the forest.

The Forest Service recommends high clearance 4-wheel drive vehicles for winter forest road travel. Visitors should depart early to maximize daylight hours and prepare for various weather conditions. Essential equipment includes traction devices, a shovel, warm clothing, blankets, flashlight, first aid kit, saw, tarp, and rope for securing the tree.

Starting December 1, some Forest Service roads will close to wheeled vehicles and become part of the Washington State Sno-Park system. These roads will be groomed for winter recreation, requiring Sno-Park permits for parking access.

Permits can be purchased in person at the Methow Valley, Wenatchee River, Cle Elum, and Naches Ranger District offices. The Forest Service advises checking office hours before visiting. A complete list of local vendors selling permits is available on the Forest Service website.
