CHELAN. - The Lake Chelan Research Institute (LCRI) received a $1,500 scholarship grant from organizers of the Chelan Earth Day Fair to support student research positions, officials announced Wednesday.
The funds will support internships and summer positions for local high school students conducting research on Lake Chelan's ecosystem and environmental conditions.
"This scholarship enables us to engage young local talent in critical research about Lake Chelan's health and future," said Phil Long, LCRI Executive Director.
Two Chelan High School students currently benefit from the program. Jerman Hernandez, an LCRI intern, developed a computer system for creating detailed 3-D models of the lake. Olivia Nelson, hired for summer 2024, assists with data collection and analysis of lake conditions.
The scholarship funding came from Earth Day Fair sponsor donations. The annual fair is scheduled for April 19 at Riverwalk Park in Chelan.
