Narrow win secures transportation funding for Chelan

CHELAN — Voters in the city of Chelan have approved a 0.3% sales tax increase to fund transportation improvements, passing by a margin of just five votes. The measure will fund the city's Transportation Benefit District (TBD) and take effect January 1, 2025.

The new revenue will be directed toward projects aimed at improving safety, enhancing mobility, and reducing congestion throughout the lakeside community. City officials have announced that all TBD revenues will be held in a designated special fund to ensure transparency in the allocation and use of the funds.

While tax collection will begin in early 2025, city administrators note that it will take several weeks before the municipality begins receiving the revenue. The funds will support various transportation initiatives, including a comprehensive traffic study focused on downtown congestion and Lakeside parking challenges.

Over the next year, city officials will evaluate projects within the Six-Year Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). The city will also work to refine cost estimates for a proposed two-way bridge and explore alternative options as requested by the City Council.
