Riverwalk boardwalk damaged in Chelan, temporary detour in place

Posted

CHELAN — A section of wooden boardwalk at Riverwalk Park in Chelan has been closed after sustaining damage from fallen trees. The Chelan Public Utility District has implemented a temporary detour route along South Emerson Street.

The damage, which affects approximately 20-30 feet of the boardwalk's central section, was discovered and reported around 10 a.m. Sunday. Officials believe recent weather conditions played a significant role in the incident.

"At this time, Chelan PUD believes that soil saturation over the last few weeks destabilized the wooded hillside above the trail, causing a few trees to fall," according to a statement from the utility district. No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.

The PUD will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the area, including evaluations of the hillside's stability, remaining trees, and the boardwalk's structural integrity. The timeline for repairs remains uncertain, as officials must first determine the full scope of necessary work and obtain required permits.

"We want to thank our park visitors for their patience while we determine the scope of repairs and permitting work required to re-open the boardwalk," the PUD statement said.
