AppleSox Update
NANAIMO, British Columbia -- The Wenatchee AppleSox overcame a six-run deficit with an explosive 11-run sixth inning to defeat the Nanaimo NightOwls 14-8 on Sunday at Serauxmen Stadium.
Trailing 6-0 entering the sixth, Wenatchee (22-11, 4-2 second half) sent 16 batters to the plate, with 10 consecutive hitters reaching base at one point. Garrett Cutting delivered the decisive blow with a bases-clearing triple to give the AppleSox a 7-6 lead they would not relinquish.
Evan Cloyd led Wenatchee's offensive onslaught with his second four-hit performance in four games. Hunter Friedberg contributed three hits, while Cam Hoiland and Cannon Peery each added two hits to the 14-run effort.
The pivotal sixth inning began with Hoiland drawing a bases-loaded walk. RBI singles from Friedberg and Kana Morisaki followed before Cutting's three-run triple broke the game open. Cloyd then doubled home Cutting, and Antonio Gianni drove in another run with a fielder's choice. The inning concluded with Hoiland executing a safety squeeze and Friedberg delivering his second RBI single of the frame.
Wenatchee added three insurance runs in the eighth, capitalizing on a passed ball and a wild pitch.
Nanaimo (13-16) had jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, powered by solo home runs in the first and second innings. The NightOwls hit five home runs over the final two games of the series.
The AppleSox return home Tuesday to face the Edmonton Riverhawks for Hispanic Heritage Night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
