CHELAN - The Pioneer Fire burning in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has grown to 13,492 acres as of Saturday, July 13, according to fire officials. The human-caused fire, which began on June 8 and remains under investigation, continues to pose challenges for the 776 personnel currently assigned to the blaze.

Yesterday, the fire exhibited active behavior, cresting the West Fork Meadow Creek and moving towards Round Mountain. Fire activity in the Prince Creek and East Fork Prince Creek areas remains high, with flanking and uphill fire runs. However, a reconnaissance flight over Lone Fir Creek revealed minimal fire activity in that area.

Firefighters have made progress in protecting the community of Stehekin, with the addition of another Type 2 hand crew, bringing the total to three crews ready to respond if the fire moves down from Meadow Creek. Crews are also constructing a shaded fuel break around the Ranch and installing sprinklers near Emerson Acres to enhance community protection.

Despite a slight cooling trend, temperatures remain 5-10 degrees above average, and relative humidity levels are low. The air quality outlook for the area can be found at https://bit.ly/PioneerFireSmoke.

Evacuation levels 1, 2, and 3 remain in effect around the Pioneer Fire, and the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has implemented a closure order for much of the fire area. A Temporary Flight Restriction is also in place over the fire.

Authorities emphasize that the communities of Chelan, Manson, and Stehekin remain open to visitors, balancing economic concerns with ongoing safety measures. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to all evacuation orders and fire restrictions in place.
