Pioneer Fire grows to over 15,000 acres, crews conduct firing operations near Stehekin

CHELAN - The Pioneer Fire burning in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has expanded to 15,757 acres as of Sunday, July 14, according to fire officials. Despite the growth, firefighters have made progress in protecting the community of Stehekin through strategic firing operations.

Yesterday, crews conducted firing operations approximately 8 miles southeast of Stehekin to reduce fuel loading around structures along the lakeshore between Moore Point and Meadow Creek. The low-intensity, controlled burns successfully removed dry and dead ground fuels and debris, creating a buffer zone to protect homes and infrastructure from the approaching wildfire.

Firefighters also completed a hose lay from Nelson Butte to the shoreline of the lake, which will be tested today. Reconnaissance missions are being conducted to locate any active fire behavior in the area, with near-term priorities focused on point protection for cabins and infrastructure on private and federal lands.

A heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service, combined with breezy and extremely dry conditions, is expected to contribute to active fire behavior today. The fire, which began on June 8 and remains under investigation, is being managed by a total of 804 personnel.

In response to the ongoing wildfire threat, the Washington Department of Natural Resources is offering financial assistance to landowners for wildfire resilience and forest health. The program aims to help landowners take proactive measures to protect their properties and reduce the risk of wildfire damage. Evacuation levels 1, 2, and 3 remain in effect around the Pioneer Fire, and the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has implemented a closure order for much of the fire area. A Temporary Flight Restriction is also in place over the fire.

The communities of Chelan, Manson, and Stehekin remain open to visitors, as authorities work to balance economic concerns with ongoing safety measures. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to all evacuation orders and fire restrictions in place.
