WSP plans DUI high visibility enforcement patrols at Lake Chelan

CHELAN - The Washington State Patrol (WSP) District 6 has announced its partnership with allied agencies to conduct a High Visibility Enforcement (HiVE) patrol at Lake Chelan from May 24 to May 26. The primary goal of this initiative is to remove impaired drivers from the roadway and ensure public safety during the Memorial Day weekend.

This marks the second HiVE patrol of the year, focusing specifically on Lake Chelan and its surrounding areas. Historical data reveals that Memorial Day weekend is one of the most dangerous holidays for drivers, with fatality and serious injury collisions increasing by over 50% between April and May. Impaired driving significantly contributes to the likelihood of these severe incidents.

To maximize the impact of the HiVE patrol, WSP will strategically deploy resources based on agency data, ensuring a strong presence at key locations and times. The patrol will include specialized units such as K9 troopers, Drug Recognition Experts (DRE), and the Aggressive Driving Apprehension Team (ADAT). Additionally, available allied agencies will provide assistance to strengthen the enforcement efforts.

District 6 Captain Daniel Richmond emphasized the importance of responsible decision-making during the holiday weekend, stating, "Memorial Day weekend is a time for friends and family to enjoy the nice weather and kick off the unofficial beginning to summer. If you chose to drink, please don't get behind the wheel."
