Extreme heat grips North Central Washington, raising health concerns

WENATCHEE — North Central Washington is bracing for a potentially dangerous heat wave, with temperatures expected to soar above 100 degrees Fahrenheit through Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Spokane.

An excessive heat warning has been issued for a large swath of the region, including the Wenatchee area, Okanogan Valley, and Waterville Plateau. Forecasters predict high temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, with overnight lows only dropping to the mid-60s to mid-70s.

The extreme heat poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those without access to air conditioning. Health officials are urging residents to take precautions.

"Heat will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially those without effective cooling or adequate hydration," the National Weather Service warned in its bulletin.

Local authorities are advising residents to stay hydrated, seek air-conditioned spaces, and check on neighbors and relatives who may be at higher risk.

The heat wave is expected to impact daily life across the region, potentially straining power grids and increasing wildfire risk in the already dry landscape.
