CHELAN - The Chelan County Sheriff's Office has released new information about the May 17 shooting that left one man dead and another critically injured near Chelan.

According to Sheriff Mike Morrison, detectives have identified the victim and suspect involved in the incident on Stayman Flats Road. The investigation revealed that 49-year-old Luis Rojas-Resendiz had confronted 40-year-old Filiberto Valasco Lopez over a dispute involving a woman.

Witnesses and evidence gathered at the scene indicate that Valasco Lopez and the woman were traveling together to work when Rojas-Resendiz stopped their vehicle near the intersection of Stayman Flats Road and Summer Camp Road. Rojas-Resendiz then allegedly opened fire on Valasco Lopez, seriously wounding him.

As Valasco Lopez and the woman fled northbound on Stayman Flats Road, Rojas-Resendiz pursued them, eventually forcing their vehicle off the road near milepost 3. He then exited his vehicle and shot Valasco Lopez again before walking a short distance away and taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Deputy Smith of the Chelan County Sheriff's Office, who was first to arrive at the scene, provided life-saving trauma aid to Valasco Lopez, including the application of four chest seals. Valasco Lopez was transported to Central Washington Hospital and later airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. As of May 30, his condition has been upgraded to stable. The woman involved in the incident was unharmed.
