Pioneer Fire expands to 30,352 acres

Posted

STEHEKIN — The Pioneer Fire in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest continues to grow, reaching 30,352 acres as of Monday, with containment holding at 14%, officials reported.

State Fire Assistance resources are arriving in Stehekin Monday to bolster firefighting efforts. These additional personnel will focus on implementing Structure Protection Plans and enhancing fire resilience for local structures and infrastructure.

The fire's northern flank is advancing toward Flick Creek, while the upper drainages of Fish Creek and Prince Creek on the eastern edge show increased activity. Fire officials anticipate further growth today due to predicted high temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect, with west-northwest winds expected to gust up to 25 miles per hour and humidity dropping to around 25%. These conditions could lead to active fire behavior, including torching and potential crown fire runs.

Firefighters have completed contingency lines between the fire and Manson along Coyote Ridge and Nelson Ridge, with hose lays installed. Work on an indirect fireline along Cooper Ridge is nearing completion. A group of boats is transporting firefighters and equipment to remote areas along the lake edge.

Unmanned aerial systems (drones) are being utilized in the northern part of the fire to detect hot spots and conduct strategic firing operations when necessary to protect cabins and infrastructure. Helicopter support continues to play a crucial role in firefighting efforts.

Level 1, 2, and 3 evacuation orders remain in effect around the Pioneer Fire. The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has maintained its closure order for much of the fire area, and a Temporary Flight Restriction remains in place.

Community meetings are scheduled for Tuesday in Stehekin at 5 p.m. at the Golden West Visitor Center and Wednesday in Manson at 5:30 p.m. at the Manson High School. to provide residents with the latest information on the fire's status and response efforts. The meeting in Manson will be streamed live on the Pioneer Fire Information Facebook page.

As the Pioneer Fire continues to challenge containment efforts, officials urge residents to stay informed and adhere to all evacuation orders and forest closures.
