Air Quality Alert issued for Chelan and Okanogan Counties due to wildfire smoke

Posted

WENATCHEE - The Washington Department of Ecology has issued an Air Quality Alert for all of Chelan County and parts of Okanogan County, including the Methow Valley down to Brewster, due to expected smoke from the Pioneer Fire and other regional wildfires. The alert will remain in effect until further notice.

Particulate matter (PM2.5) levels may reach Unhealthy and Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups levels, according to the alert. When air quality is Unhealthy, everyone should reduce exposure by limiting time outside, avoiding strenuous activity, and following tips for cleaner indoor air. Sensitive groups, such as those with respiratory issues, should take additional steps to reduce exposure when air quality is Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.

The Department of Ecology advises everyone to watch for symptoms as a sign to reduce exposure to the smoke. Agricultural and outdoor burning restrictions are currently in effect for the region.

The Pioneer Fire, which started on June 8, has already burned over 20,000 acres in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Over 794 firefighters are currently battling the blaze, which is only 14% contained. Other smaller wildfires in the region are also contributing to the smoky conditions.
