Chelan High School's Teacher Academy prepares next generation of educators

Posted

CHELAN - Chelan High School's Careers in Education/Teacher Academy program has been making significant progress in preparing students for careers in the field of education. The program, led by experienced educator April Slagle, has been running for three years and has already seen impressive results.

The Teacher Academy is a dual credit program that allows students to earn five college credits from Central Washington University (CWU) upon successfully completing the class. To date, 48 students have participated in the program, with 11 of them either currently enrolled or planning to enroll this fall in Teacher Education programs at CWU, Washington State University (WSU), or Whitworth University.

The program's curriculum is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the education field. In addition to classroom learning, students gain hands-on experience by working in classrooms throughout the Lake Chelan School District. This practical experience allows them to observe and interact with teachers and students, giving them valuable insights into the day-to-day responsibilities of educators.

Furthermore, the program regularly features guest speakers from various aspects of the educational system. These speakers share their experiences and knowledge with the students, helping them to understand the diverse roles and opportunities available within the field of education.

April Slagle, the driving force behind the Teacher Academy, expressed her pride in seeing her students pursue their passion for teaching and continue their education at respected institutions. "It's gratifying to know that our program is making a difference in the lives of these young people and potentially shaping the future of education," she said.

While the program's ultimate goal is to encourage some of these future educators to return to Chelan and contribute to the local education system, the skills and knowledge they acquire through the Teacher Academy will undoubtedly serve them well wherever their careers may take them.

The success of Chelan High School's Careers in Education/Teacher Academy program underscores the importance of investing in educational initiatives that support and nurture students' career aspirations. By providing students with a solid foundation in the field of education, the program is helping to ensure a bright future for both the students and the communities they will serve.

As these aspiring educators embark on their academic journeys at various institutions, they will carry with them the valuable experiences and lessons gained during their time at Chelan High School. The Teacher Academy has not only prepared them for the challenges and rewards of a career in education but has also instilled in them a passion for making a difference in the lives of future generations.
