Rain fails To dampen spirits at Summer Of Love fundraiser

Posted

CHELAN - Despite heavy rain, the Summer of Love 2024 benefit fundraiser for the Chelan Valley Community Nurse program went ahead as planned on Saturday, August 24, with performers and attendees alike embracing the spirit of "The Show Must Go On!"

The event, held at the Alpenhorn Outback Café, featured performances by Brittany Jean, Waterdog, and The "B" Side, who played a variety of classic rock favorites to a crowd sporting Woodstock-themed costumes and umbrellas. Attendees participated in a silent auction, raffle, and even danced in the rain.

A costume contest added to the festivities, with Dan and Katy Pulfer winning the "Most Authentic Hippie" category. Upon leaving, they quipped, "We didn't have to do much!" Vickie Carr took home the "Most Creative" award for her "Make Love Not War" sign, while Christy Watson was recognized for her oversized peace symbol earrings and beads.

The event organizers expanded the costume contest to include children this year, with awards going to several young participants. Sandy Zimcheck managed a "Kids Craft" table, keeping the younger attendees entertained despite the weather.

Event organizers acknowledged that while the rain presented challenges, feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. One organizer noted, "The rain was indeed a welcome blessing for the environment, and in spite of presenting a challenge for event organizers and volunteers, feedback from people who attended have reported 'had a blast' and 'loved the music,' which proves that the spirit of those who danced in the rain 55 years ago at Yasgurs Farm, abides."

The Summer of Love fundraiser is a crucial source of operating funds for the Lake Chelan Community Nurse program, which provides free services to vulnerable and frail residents of the Lake Chelan Valley. Due to weather-related low attendance, organizers plan to hold another event in the fall to auction remaining items.

Bub Watson and the staff of the Alpenhorn Outback Café received special recognition for their support in hosting the annual event.
