Pioneer Fire containment holds

CHELAN — The Pioneer Fire remains at 38,730 acres and 23% containment as of Friday, August 23, showing no growth since the previous day's report.

The fire continues to hold within established containment lines. The number of personnel assigned to the blaze has decreased from 519 to 444, indicating a shift in firefighting strategy as the threat diminishes.

In Stehekin, crews focused on reinforcing the Little Boulder handline, addressing any remaining hot spots. The retardant check line along Rainbow Ridge is holding, with no visible smoke reported in the Boulder Creek area.

Following yesterday's evacuation level reductions, Stehekin has reopened to visitors. However, officials warn that fire-related hazards persist, and many trails and campgrounds remain closed. Visitors are strongly advised to verify available services before traveling to the area.

Firefighters continue vegetation debris removal and chipping operations along roads. South of the fire, efforts are underway to repair damage caused by fire suppression traffic.

The human-caused fire, which began on June 8, has not shown movement along its southern edge for a month. This stability has allowed fire managers to begin removing some resources, including approximately 5 miles of hose lay from the Nelson Butte contingency line.

A Temporary Flight Restriction remains in effect over the fire area, and unauthorized drone activity is prohibited. The Pacific Crest Trail also remains closed in several areas across Washington due to multiple wildfires.
