CHELAN - Firefighters have made progress in battling the Stayman Fire near Chelan, as updated mapping reveals a reduction in the fire's size. The blaze, which began on August 20, has now been more accurately measured at 3,118 acres, down from the previously reported 3,458 acres.
As of Thursday, August 22, the fire remains at 0% containment, but officials report reduced fire activity compared to previous days. A team of 167 personnel, including five crews, 27 engines, one helicopter, and three water tenders, are currently assigned to the incident.
Northwest Incident Management Team 3, which assumed command of the fire on Wednesday, reports that firefighters have been successful in stopping further fire spread. An aerial survey conducted yesterday observed very little residual smoke. Ground crews have been focusing on securing the east and west flanks of the fire, conducting mop-up operations to a depth of 30 feet, and extinguishing hot spots.
Thursday's firefighting efforts continued to concentrate on securing the fire's edge, with particular attention to the northeastern edge at the head of the fire.
Evacuation orders remain in place for affected areas. Residents are urged to stay informed through Chelan County Emergency Management's social media channels and the county's Emergency Incidents Map.
The cause of the Stayman Fire remains under investigation.
Authorities continue to request that boaters on Lake Chelan give space to aviation resources that may need to collect water from the lake to support firefighting operations.
